Meet the veterinarians of Haags Dierencentrum
The Veterinarians
Nadine: My name is Nadine, and I graduated in 2018 in Utrecht. During my studies, I interned at various clinics and also volunteered at Haags Dierencentrum. After graduating, I worked at three clinics. For the past few years, I have worked with great pleasure at a busy, medium-sized clinic. There, I learned a lot in areas such as internal medicine, ultrasound, dentistry, and surgical skills. Throughout this time, I have always had a soft spot for shelter animals. When the opportunity for full-time work in the Haags Dierencentrum clinic arose, it was too great an opportunity to pass up. Since 2025, I have been working enthusiastically with this fantastic team.
What I love most about my job is seeing animals—sometimes sad little creatures when they arrive—recover and blossom into healthy, happy animals. I go to work every day with a smile on my face.
Jasmijn: My name is Jasmijn, and I graduated not too long ago, in 2022. During my studies in Utrecht, I researched military service dogs and how they can support soldiers in deployment areas, as well as assistance dogs in the Netherlands. Assistance dogs are often still not allowed in places like supermarkets and hospitals, even though my research showed that their paws are cleaner than the shoes of their owners!
I had interned at HDC a few times, and then a spot opened up in the clinic! After graduation, I almost immediately started working here as a veterinarian. I also work a few days at a ‘regular’ practice. What I love most about working in the shelter is the many kittens that come to us or are born here. It’s a lot of work to care for them, get them healthy, keep them healthy, and prepare them for departure, but it’s very rewarding, especially when I see them happily playing or when they are adopted. Another beautiful aspect is the bond I form with some animals because I have to keep a close eye on them. Most animals are fortunately adopted very quickly, but some need more care and stay a bit longer at HDC. Then I get to know them very well, and it can be difficult to see them leave for their new home. Fortunately, we make many people happy with their new pet!
