Our Sweet Cats Are Looking for a New Home – Can You Help?

This is Tijger, a male cat who came to the animal shelter in The Hague as a kitten. Our shelter has space for around 350 cats, ranging from young to old. Some are abandoned in empty houses, while others are found wandering the streets. All our cats are looking for a new owner who can offer them a safe and loving home.

Why Adopt a Cat?

Adopting a cat is a wonderful and compassionate way to welcome an animal into your family. It’s not only nice to have a new pet — you’re also saving a life.
By adopting, you give an animal a second chance and help it find a loving home. This is true for all pets. The team at The Hague Animal Center works hard every day to match cats and dogs with the right owners, always putting the animal’s well-being first. Adoption is a responsible and sustainable choice.

How Do You Find the Right Cat for You?

If you want to adopt a cat, start by filling out the adoption form. You’ll provide information about yourself, your living situation, your household, and your home. Based on this, our team will help match you with the most suitable cats.

After submitting the form, a staff member will contact you to schedule a visit to the shelter. You can already browse the profiles of available cats on our website to get an idea of which ones might suit you.

During your visit, you’ll be able to meet the cats, play with them, and see if there’s a connection. Ask about their personalities and habits — our caretakers are happy to advise you and help you find the right match for your lifestyle.

Successful Rehoming

The first step is finding a good match between cat and adopter. With proper preparation and support from our shelter, this usually goes smoothly. Once adopted, it’s important that your new cat has time to settle into their new environment and feel at ease.

Preparing for Your New Cat

Make sure your home is cat-friendly and that you have all the necessary supplies.
Set aside enough time to play with and socialize your cat.
Kitten-proof your home to avoid accidents.
Take the time to get to know your cat.
Start with short play and bonding sessions to help them adjust.
Ensure your cat feels safe and comfortable.
Give your cat time to adapt to their new surroundings.
The First Contact With Your New Cat

The first encounter with your new cat is important. Make it calm and stress-free. Give your cat time to adjust and don’t force anything. Let them decide when to make contact. Place them in a quiet room with food, water, a litter box, and a hiding spot. Sit quietly without approaching them, and speak softly. Let the cat come to you. This builds trust naturally and lays the foundation for a positive relationship.

Caring for Your Cat

Schedule yearly vaccinations — the vet will also check their overall health.
Provide good quality food and fresh water.
Consider pet insurance to cover any unexpected medical costs.
Community and Support

Our shelter is more than just a building — it’s a community of people dedicated to animal welfare. We help animals find new homes and support new owners with advice and information to make the transition as smooth as possible.

The Hague Animal Center is committed to rehoming animals with loving new families. Our team works hard to create the best possible match between animal and owner.

Our organization consists of volunteers and staff, all united by one mission: to help and care for animals in need.

We are also active on social media, where we share stories of our animals to reach and inspire more people to adopt. As a non-profit organization, all donations and adoption fees go directly to the care of our animals. We are deeply grateful for all the support we receive.
