Good pet care consists of more than just food, attention, and exercise. Deworming and flea treatments are also part of basic care. But how often should you actually do it? That depends on your pet’s age and lifestyle.
Deworming: when and how often?
Worms can be harmful to your dog or cat’s health. They cause abdominal issues, weight loss, and sometimes even more serious problems. Regular deworming helps to prevent this.
And it’s not just important for your pet. Some worms can also infect humans. They can cause inflammation, and children in particular run an extra risk of health complaints, such as asthma. A good deworming schedule therefore protects your entire family.
These are the general guidelines:
Puppies
- From 2 weeks of age: deworm at week 2, 4, 6, and 8
- Then monthly until they are 6 months old
- Subsequently every 3 months
Kittens
- From 3 weeks of age: deworm at week 3, 5, 7, and 9
- Then monthly until they are 6 months old
- Subsequently every 3 months
Dogs that eat raw meat
- Deworm monthly, due to the higher risk of infections
Indoor cats
- Once or twice a year is usually sufficient
Outdoor cats, especially if they like to hunt
- At least every 3 months
- Do they regularly catch mice or birds? Then more frequent deworming is recommended
Flea treatment: how often and why?
Fleas can cause significant itching, but they also transmit diseases and worms. That’s why preventive flea treatment is important, even if you don’t see any fleas.
How often you should treat for fleas depends on the product you use, the season, and your pet’s lifestyle. As a general guideline: treat monthly, especially in the warmer months and for animals that spend a lot of time outside or have contact with other animals.
