Sometimes your dog or cat seems to feel just fine… until things suddenly go wrong. Many pets are masters at hiding pain or discomfort. That’s why it’s important for you as an owner to pay close attention to small changes. Signs that might seem innocent, but could point to an underlying problem.
Watch for changes in behavior or routine
You know your animal best. That’s exactly why you’re often the first to notice when “something isn’t right.”
For example, consider:
- Your dog is less enthusiastic when you grab the leash
- Your cat is suddenly hiding much more in strange places
- Your pet is quieter, sleeps more, or is actually more restless
- Getting tired faster, short of breath, or panting without exertion
These subtle behavioral changes can be the first sign that your pet isn’t feeling well.
Eating, drinking, pooping, and peeing: it all tells a story
Changes in eating or drinking behavior are often important indicators:
- Appetite suddenly decreased or actually excessively greedy
- Drinking more or less than usual
- Difficulty eating or chewing
Changes in stool or urination are also important:
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Accidents in the house
- Urinating more or less often
- Strong odor or change in color
Always have your pet checked if in doubt, especially if you see these changes for more than a day or two.
Clear physical signs
Some complaints are very obvious, such as:
- Vomiting or coughing
- Sneezing or a runny nose
- Scratching, licking, or biting in one spot
- Limping or lameness
Internalizers: pay extra attention
Dogs and cats often only show pain when it becomes really serious. Cats in particular are known for being withdrawn and stoic. They retreat or just seem more sluggish. And that “different than usual” is the signal for you as an owner to be alert. When in doubt: contact your vet
