Recently, the Haags Dierencentrum had a very special patient: Lovey, a calico cat who had just been surrendered. Upon arrival, Lovey was very scared and stressed, which is common for new shelter animals. Because of this stress, our veterinarians couldn’t immediately determine her sex. Since calico cats are usually female, we assumed Lovey was a girl.
Surprise during sterilization
As with all our shelter animals, a sterilization was scheduled for Lovey. During the surgery, our vet was surprised: instead of ovaries, she found testicles in the abdomen and male genitalia hidden within a structure that looked like a vulva. At the same time, a normally formed uterus was also present. Lovey turned out to be a hermaphrodite, a rare cat with both male and female reproductive organs.
Lovey is recovering well
Fortunately, Lovey didn’t notice anything about the unique discovery and recovered well from the surgery. Being a hermaphrodite doesn’t make Lovey any less of a cat, just more special.
