Last week we had a special visit at our Haags Dierencentrum: Jesse Klaver stopped by to meet our dogs and cats and to learn more about our work, the challenges we face daily, and the rising costs of animal care.
Financial challenges for pet owners
During his visit, we spoke extensively about the increasing costs of animal care and the financial pressure many pet owners are experiencing. More and more, we notice that having a pet almost seems to be becoming a luxury, while animals are actually a source of comfort, companionship, and happiness for many people. From rising vet bills to the daily costs of food and care: many owners are finding it difficult these days to provide their animals with the care they deserve.
Jesse Klaver listened attentively and discussed possible ways to bring attention to these issues and look for solutions together. For us as an animal shelter, it is incredibly valuable that there are politicians and social organizations that have an eye for the challenges that animals and their owners encounter.
We hope that this visit contributes to more awareness about the financial challenges surrounding pets. Because the more people and organizations are aware of this, the greater the chance that we can work together to provide practical solutions and a future where having a pet remains an achievable and loving choice, rather than a luxury.
