With your presentation or project, you’re not just helping your class learn something, but you’re also contributing to more understanding and care for animals. You can really help out!
What is the Haags Dierencentrum
The Haags Dierencentrum is an animal shelter that takes in dogs and cats that temporarily don’t have a home. Every year, hundreds of animals come in. Some animals are found on the street and brought in by the Animal Ambulance. Other animals are surrendered because their owners can no longer care for them. At the shelter, these animals get a safe place, good care, and plenty of attention.
What happens to the animals in the shelter?
When a dog or cat arrives, they are first checked by the vet. In our own clinic, animals receive things like vaccinations, are microchipped, and have surgery if needed. Some animals are sick, underweight, or scared. Other animals have behavioral issues because they’ve been through bad experiences. Staff and volunteers work hard every day to make these animals healthy and happy again.
After that, we look for a new, loving home. We call that rehoming. We look carefully at which owner fits which animal, so it becomes a success for both.
Animal welfare: an important topic
In your presentation or project, you can also talk about animal welfare. That’s about how you take good care of animals and what they need to feel good. Think about good food, exercise, attention, and medical care. But also about rest, safety, and love.
You can also talk about how animals end up in the shelter and how you can sometimes prevent that. For example, by thinking carefully before you get a pet. A dog or cat isn’t a toy, but an animal you have to care for for years.
