Our cats are looking for a new home
Our sweet cats are looking for a new home. Can you help?
This is Tijger, a male cat who arrived as a kitten at the animal shelter in The Hague. In our shelter, we have room for about 350 cats, from young to old. Some cats are left behind in empty houses, while others wander the streets. All of our cats are looking for a new owner who can offer them a safe home. Will you help us give these sweet cats a new home?
Why adopt a cat?
To adopt a cat is a wonderful and honest way to welcome an animal into its new family. It’s not just great to have a new pet, but you’re also saving an animal.
By adopting a cat, you give an animal a second chance and help him or her find a loving home. This applies to every pet. The staff at the Haags Dierencentrum do their best every day to connect dogs and cats with their new owners. During this process, the welfare of the animals always comes first. By choosing adoption, you are making a sustainable and responsible choice.
How do you find a cat that suits you?
Do you want to adopt a cat? Then start by filling out the adoption form. Here, you provide information about yourself, your living situation, your family composition, and your housing conditions. Based on this information, a staff member will look for which cats might suit you best.
After sending the form, a staff member will contact you to make an appointment for a visit to the shelter. You can already find extensive information about the cats on the website, so you can start looking for a good match.
During your visit, you can meet the cats, play with them, and see if there’s a connection. Feel free to ask about the cats’ personalities and habits. The caregivers are happy to think along with you and give advice on which cat best fits your lifestyle.
Successful rehoming
Step 1 is to start finding the right match between a cat and the new owner. With good preparation and the right support from the Haags Dierencentrum, this process will go smoothly. After you have adopted a cat, it is very important that they can get used to their new environment. Make sure the cat feels at ease.

Preparing for the arrival of your new cat
- Make sure your home is cat-friendly and that you have everything you need
- Make sure you have enough time to play and socialize with your cat.
- Kitten-proof your home to prevent accidents.
- Take the time to get to know your cat well.
- Start with short attention and play sessions to let your cat get used to your presence.
- Make sure your cat feels safe and comfortable in its new environment.
- Give your cat time to adjust to its new home.
The first contact with your new cat
The first contact with your new cat is an important moment that is best kept calm and relaxed. Give your cat time to get used to the new environment and don’t force anything. Let him or her decide when they want to make contact. Place her in a quiet room with her food, water, litter box, and a hiding spot where she feels safe. Sit quietly in the room without immediately trying to approach. It often helps to speak softly. Let the little one come to you. This way, you build trust naturally and lay the foundation for a great bond.
Cat care
- Have the cat vaccinated annually. The vet will then immediately check the cat’s condition.
- Provide good food and plenty of water.
- Consider pet insurance to cover unexpected medical costs.
Community and support
Our animal shelter is more than just a place for these animals. It is an organization of people who are always committed to animal welfare and helping animals find a new home. We give the new owner advice and all the information about the cat. This makes the transition to a new home as smooth as possible. The Haags Dierencentrum focuses on rehoming animals in a new loving home. Together with the team, we work hard to find the right match between animal and a new owner. This way, it becomes a success for both.
Our organization consists of volunteers and staff who all have one common goal: helping and caring for animals in need.
Additionally, we are active on social media, where we share our animals and their stories. This helps us reach more people and inspire more people to adopt an animal. As a non-profit organization, all donations and adoption fees go directly to the care of our animals. We are grateful for all the support and help we receive. Are you interested in adopting a cat? The move to a new home can be exciting for an animal. That’s why we provide guidance and tips to make the transition as smooth as possible. We also schedule a few familiarization visits if necessary before the adoption becomes final.
