Neutering or spaying

Neutering or spaying your cat

Are you having a kitten neutered or spayed after adoption? Then it’s important to make an appointment on time. At Haags Dierencentrum, you can have your cat fixed from the age of six months. This procedure prevents unwanted litters and contributes to your cat’s better health.

Preparing for the procedure

Good preparation is essential for a safe neutering or spaying procedure. On the day of the appointment, you bring your cat to the clinic around 9:00 AM. Additionally, make sure your cat is fasting. This means your cat should not eat anything from 8:00 PM the night before. Drinking water is allowed.

Also pay close attention to your cat’s health. Does your cat seem ill or do you notice anything unusual? Please contact us in advance. Your cat must be fit and healthy to safely undergo anesthesia.

The treatment at the vet

Upon arrival, your cat will be welcomed by an assistant and given a spot in the recovery area. For extra comfort, you can bring a blanket with a familiar scent from home.

Before the anesthesia starts, the vet performs a check-up. This includes checking the heart, lungs, and weight. Based on this, it is determined if your cat is fit for the procedure. Your cat will also be given a painkiller.

Recovery after neutering or spaying

After the surgery, your cat can wake up quietly on a heating mattress. As soon as your cat is fully awake and their body temperature remains stable, they can go home.

Usually, you can pick up your cat between 4:00 PM and 4:30 PM. When picking them up, you will receive clear instructions for aftercare. You will receive this information in writing or by email, so you can read through everything at your leisure. You will also be given a liquid painkiller for the first few days after the procedure.
