We all want our pets to be healthy and happy. But did you know that being overweight is one of the most common health problems in dogs and cats? Fortunately, there is a lot you can see and feel for yourself to determine if your buddy is at a healthy weight.
At an ideal weight, your dog or cat’s abdominal line is slightly tucked up, and you can see a clear waist from above. In short-haired dogs, the last ribs are even just visible. More importantly: the ribs should always be feelable without much pressure. Not too sharp, but certainly not covered under a thick layer of fat.
3 signs that your pet is at a healthy weight
- A clear waist: Viewed from above, your dog or cat has a slim line, with a slight indentation behind the ribs.
- A tucked-up abdominal line: Viewed from the side, the belly slopes slightly upwards towards the hind legs.
- Feelable ribs: The ribs are easy to feel without much pressure. In short-haired dogs, the last ribs are even just visible.
Extra tip: use a Body Condition Score chart to assess your pet’s weight. This allows you to see at a glance whether your four-legged friend is too light, too heavy, or just right.
A healthy weight not only ensures a cheerful and active four-legged friend, but also reduces the risk of health problems. Are you unsure? Ask your own vet to take a look. Together, you can ensure that your buddy stays healthy and happy.
