Give cats a second chance and a loving home
Animal shelter cat
Found a cat or a dog? When you’ve found an animal, it’s important to know what to do. If you’ve found an animal, it’s best to call the regional animal ambulance (070-328 28 28). Many found animals go to an animal shelter, giving them a second chance at a better life. When a cat is found, it is first checked by our vet. After that, the cat will stay in a separate room for two weeks. This room houses all newly arrived cats. They don’t come into contact with each other, but they can see one another. This gives a potential owner the chance to collect the cat. After these two weeks, the cat becomes the property of the Haags Dierencentrum and moves to a cat room with other cats. Shelter animals often experience a lot of stress due to the new environment, so it’s important to ensure we can rehome them and give them a second chance.
Adopting a cat
When you adopt a cat, you’re essentially gaining a new family member. A cat is a living being with its own needs and personality. Before adopting a cat, you should consider whether you can provide the right care for your new pet. Our shelter has a wide range of cats looking for a new home.
Rehoming a cat
Sometimes a cat needs to be rehomed. This can be for various reasons, such as changes in living situation or health issues. If you’re considering rehoming your cat, it’s important to contact our shelter first. We take the cat in, the person surrendering the animal signs a surrender form and pays the surrender fee. After that, the Haags Dierencentrum Foundation becomes the owner of the cat, and it can be rehomed.
Adopting adult cats
Adult cats are often already house-trained and used to a home environment, making them a great choice for those seeking a calm and stable companion. The shelter also has many kittens waiting for a new owner. In our animal shelter, adult male and female cats tend to be a bit calmer than kittens. If you’re looking for a cat as a pet, Haags Dierencentrum is happy to help!

Our shelter is an expert in cat care. The Haags Dierencentrum offers a wide range of services, from medical care to boarding. Our staff will be happy to advise you on adopting a cat.
Support an animal shelter
The (medical) care of shelter cats involves high costs. We rely largely on donors and sponsors. Without your help, we cannot help the animals. Support us and become a donor. The Haags Dierencentrum has ANBI status, so your contribution fully benefits the shelter animals.
Frequently asked questions about adopting a cat at the Haags Dierencentrum
How can I adopt a cat from the animal shelter?
You can adopt a cat by taking a look at the animal shelter’s website. Here you’ll find all available cats with information about their personality and background. You can then fill out the form on the page of the cat you’d like to meet. We will then contact you for an appointment.
What happens if a cat is found as a stray?
When a cat arrives at the shelter as a stray, we first check if it’s microchipped and look for the owner. Then the cat is checked by the vet. The cat then stays in a separate room for two weeks to give the owner a chance to collect it. After this period, the cat is moved to a cat room so we can find a new owner.
Can I also adopt adult cats from the animal shelter?
Yes, when adopting a cat from the shelter, you can choose both adult cats and kittens. Adult cats are often already house-trained and used to a home environment, which usually makes the transition smooth.
How does rehoming/surrendering a cat work?
If you want to rehome or surrender your cat, you can contact the animal shelter. After filling out a surrender form and paying the surrender fee, the cat is transferred to the shelter for rehoming.
How much does it cost to adopt a cat?
Adoption fees vary by shelter and depend on the age and medical care the cat has received. At the Haags Dierencentrum, the cost for adopting a cat aged 1 year and older is €175, and for a cat under 1 year, it is €190.
How can I support the animal shelter?
You can support the animal shelter by becoming a donor or sponsor. Your contribution helps with the care and medical treatment of the cats.
