Why do I sometimes have to wait for a dog or cat?
Not every animal fits every situation. We only place animals once they are ready for adoption and there is a good match. This sometimes takes time, but it prevents disappointment.
Why am I not allowed to see all the dogs?
Walking past kennels causes a lot of stress for dogs. Stress can lead to health problems and distorted behavior. That is why we work with targeted introductions.
Why do I have to talk to a caretaker first?
Our caretakers know the animals well. Based on your situation, we look at whether a dog or cat really suits you. Only then does an introduction follow.
Why can't a dog go home the same day?
A dog cannot go home immediately because it is important that a good match is formed first. For both the dog and the new owner.
Multiple introductions give the dog the chance to calmly get used to new people. This helps to build trust and reduce stress. At the same time, future owners get a more realistic picture of the dog’s behavior, character, and needs.
In addition, it is a big and long-term decision. By not acting hastily, you prevent impulsive choices and increase the chance of a successful, permanent placement.
Are shelter dogs house-trained?
That varies per dog. Some dogs need to be house-trained again. You will always receive personal advice.
Are all cats and dogs neutered or spayed?
Yes, cats older than 6 months are neutered beforehand. Kittens sometimes go home earlier and can come back to us later for neutering or spaying. Upon adoption, you sign an agreement to have the animal fixed.
Most dogs are only placed once they have been spayed or neutered. An exception is sometimes made for very large breeds. These dogs and puppies can come back to us later for neutering or spaying. Upon adoption, you sign an agreement to have the animal fixed.
Can I reserve a cat or kitten?
No, cats and kittens are not reserved to prevent disappointment.
Do you always have kittens?
Kittens are mainly available from March through September. Outside of this period, there are fewer or no kittens in the animal shelter.
How long can kittens be left home alone?
8–12 weeks: max. 4 hours
12–20 weeks: max. 5 hours
20–24 weeks: max. 6 hours
From 6 months: max. 8 hours
These rules are essential for their health and development.
