“Dear staff at the Haags Dierencentrum,
We would like to send you an update about a special male cat who came to us via the Haags Dierencentrum in the spring of 2020.
After our cat CriCri passed away in October 2019, we deliberately took some time. When we felt ready for a new housemate in the spring of 2020, the shelter turned out to be almost empty. Many people had adopted an animal during the Covid period.
Yet there was a cat with some medical points of attention: Genji, named after a Japanese prince. We visited, saw him, and were immediately sold. We just had to be patient for a little while, as he was first being well cared for and patched up.
Once home, it soon became clear that “Genji” didn’t quite suit him. This cat jumped, climbed, and flew through the house as if he were on gymnastics equipment. More of an Epke than a prince. That’s why he got a new name: Epke.
Epke was energetic, climbed on everything, and never seemed to sit still. He had licked parts of his tail and paws bare, was missing a piece of his ear, and had lost several teeth due to a crooked bite. He was also put on a hypoallergenic diet. It took some getting used to.
With peace, routine, and patience, Epke grew into an affectionate and sociable cat. Nowadays, he loves lying next to us on the couch. With a blanket on our lap, he even comes to sleep contentedly. At the same time, he still clearly lets us know when it’s time for play or action.
We understand each other perfectly now. He responds to his name, seeks contact, and his coat has become so full and shiny that you’d almost think this short-hair needs a haircut.
We are incredibly happy with Epke and grateful that he came to us through the Haags Dierencentrum.”
