A new buddy for life: adopting a dog well-prepared
Adopting a dog is a major decision. After all, every dog in our shelter has its own character, background, and specific needs. That’s why we always look carefully to see if a dog fits your personal situation, living environment, and family composition. Both the dog and the new owner deserve a perfect match.

How the dog adoption process works
Interested in a dog? Get in touch
Have you seen a dog on our website that you would like to adopt? Please fill out the form on that dog’s page. One of our colleagues will then contact you. You can also contact us by email via: hond@haagsdierencentrum.nl.
Please include the dog’s name in the subject line and don’t forget to add your phone number so we can reach you quickly.
Telephone screening
After receiving your form or email, we will contact you by phone as soon as possible. During this conversation, we will exchange information and discuss things such as:
Your living and lifestyle situation
Any experience with dogs
Family composition (such as children or other pets)
- What you are looking for in a dog
The specific needs of the dog
Based on this, we assess whether the dog will end up in a suitable environment. If there is a lot of interest in the same dog, we will then invite several interested parties.
Meeting at the animal shelter
Is the phone conversation positive? Then we’ll schedule a meeting at the shelter. During this appointment:
You will receive detailed information about the dog
We will get to know you (and any family members)
You will go for a walk together to see if there’s a click
Are there multiple family members or is there already a dog in the house? Then they should also come to the shelter for an introduction.
Multiple meetings
After the first meeting, the dog cannot go home with you immediately. Adopting a dog is a big and well-considered decision. You receive a lot of information during the first appointment, and it’s nice to let everything sink in. That’s why we schedule one or more follow-up appointments.
This way, both you and the dog get enough time to get to know each other better. During these meetings, you can, for example, walk more often, bring other family members, and introduce any other pets. Our staff from the dog department will guide you carefully throughout this process.
Final decision & adoption
If there’s a match, you sign a placement agreement and the chip will be registered in your name. After the adoption, the Haags Dierencentrum offers 14 days of medical aftercare from the clinic and 3 months of aftercare from the dog department.
Dog adoption fees
The adoption costs for adopting a dog at the Haags Dierencentrum are as follows:
Dog from 1 year old: €280
Dog under 1 year old: €330
With this contribution, you help us with daily care, medical costs, and sheltering the animals. This allows us to continue helping other dogs find a new home.
