Thor & Angel

We often get asked: “Isn’t working at the shelter hard?” “I couldn’t do it.” “I’d want to take them all home with me.” And honestly… the sad stories of some former owners and the suffering of some animals is certainly nothing to be happy about. Yet, these “heavy” moments don’t come close to outweighing the beautiful moments we experience daily with our four-legged friends! Every update from a happy new owner and a very relaxed rehomed dog or cat makes us realize exactly why we do this. Ensuring that the second or next chance is THE start of a lasting, loving new life.

And sometimes our guests make the path to that start very special. Angel has been staying with us for over two years. A Cane Corso cross not even four years old. She was brought to us without a background story. In the beginning, she was terrified and hardly dared to move. Fortunately, this behavior quickly disappears once she knows people. Unfortunately, out on the street, she can still react aggressively toward people and dogs. She is therefore walked with a muzzle. For months, we have been looking for kind owners for her with a suitable house in a quiet environment with a large garden.

And now, two years later, Thor came stumbling into the shelter. An American Akita who was never picked up by his owner. At 1 year and 10 months old, Thor is a mischievous, far too clumsy toddler who thinks he’s quite funny. He generally reacts socially to other dogs. We are also looking for a house with a large garden for him.

Both Angel and Thor can’t expend nearly enough energy in the kennel. We want them to have social contact with their own kind, so we put Angel and Thor together in the field. Miraculously, Angel doesn’t react aggressively and falls for his lanky charms!

By now, both dogs are practically inseparable. They have moved into the same hallway together and spend all day together on the patio. Angel is visibly improving, and Thor is just as happy with his new girlfriend who can handle his rough play. An unexpected (but hoped for) love is born.

And now a hopeful feeling is creeping up on us that history might just repeat itself. More than 10 years ago, two Anatolian Shepherds arrived separately. The female reacted aggressively to all other dogs, except for the male Anatolian Shepherd. They found love for each other here and became inseparable. Two wonderful owners from Friesland with a large enclosed garden took them both in lovingly!

And now, over 10 years after the success story of Tjalie and Peer, we hope for the same miracle again for Angel and Thor. We would very much like to place them together. Together in one house where the dogs are also allowed inside, with kind owners who have experience in positive dog training and who have a large garden.
