Thor

With great enthusiasm, we would like to introduce you to our beautiful 1.5-year-old Thor. Thor came to us as a stray and, as incomprehensible as it may be, we never heard anything from a previous owner. They couldn’t be traced via his chip either. As a result, we know nothing about his past.

Thor is a big boy of around 45 kg, and playing with soft toys is his favorite thing in the world. At a year and a half old, he is fairly fully grown, but mentally he isn’t an adult yet and frequently behaves like a very clumsy toddler! Initially, we noticed that his fitness and muscle tone were poor. We’ve since enjoyed many walks and play sessions, and we can see his muscle development and fitness improving. During walks, he certainly knows how to use his weight and strength. He does pull on the leash (not surprising when you spend most of the day in a kennel), and if he wants to sniff something, he usually succeeds 😊. We’ve also noticed that he loves finding water during walks and thinks it’s fantastic to splash around in it! But he can also sit quietly beside you for a cuddle.

Outside, Thor reacts to other dogs by lunging towards them silently; he does the same with horses. This is mainly due to excitement rather than aggression. He has also walked several times with a small dog (a Jack Russell/Pug cross). We haven’t had the chance to let Thor play off-leash with another dog in the play area yet, so we don’t know how he behaves off-leash with other dogs.

We don’t know if Thor could stay home alone in his previous house or if he was house-trained. Being left alone will therefore need to be built up gradually. As for house-training, he may need to go outside more often at first and be rewarded when he does his business outdoors.

Here in the play area, Thor is very playful and tends to jump up on people. He loves having a soft toy in his mouth and takes great pleasure in burying them or tossing them in the air. Sometimes Thor gets so enthusiastic and playful that he nips at our arms or jackets. He doesn’t do this gently. This can often be resolved by giving him his favorite toy of the moment. As mentioned before, Thor is still a huge toddler at times and will need to learn that he shouldn’t nip at people to play, but that people only play with him using toys.

Every breed or crossbreed, large or small, needs positive guidance. This is certainly true for Thor, an American Akita who, at a year and a half, still needs to grow into a stable, social adult dog. We are looking for people with experience in positive dog training for Thor. Someone with plenty of time and patience to teach him things in a positive way. Someone with the strength to keep up with this big guy during walks. Someone with enough space and a garden where he can play and lounge. We are sure of it: someone who handles him the right way will get a world-class dog!
