Penny & Rodgers

We would like to introduce not one, but two little dogs: Penny and Rodgers, two friendly Maltese dogs who are inseparable.

Penny (female, born on 2020-08-10) and Rodgers (male, born on 2021-05-28) have been on our site before. At the time, we spent months full of hope looking for a loving new home where they would be welcome together. Unfortunately, we weren’t successful. When Penny suddenly started limping, it turned out she needed surgery on both knees due to loose kneecaps. Then came the difficult considerations: “It’s harder to rehome the dogs together.” “Penny will have to rehabilitate for the next twelve weeks and will have to stay separate from Rodgers anyway.” “Okay, we’re going to rehome Rodgers on his own!”.

However, Rodgers completely disagreed. From one day to the next, he started limping, and the specialist concluded that Rodgers also needed surgery on both knees. A lot of money was donated for the surgeries during the open day and online (for which we are truly grateful). Both dogs have now had surgery on both knees. The operations were successful. Penny and Rodgers are building up the length of their walks again and are now more than ready to find one loving home together!

During their recovery, Penny and Rodgers stayed separately in the homes of staff members. This gave us a lot of valuable information about how they behave in a home environment.

Let’s start with Penny. She is a sweet, cheerful little dog, but can be startled by unexpected movements. Still, she is making great progress: with some treats and patience, she is slowly learning that people might not be as scary as she thinks. Once she knows you, she shows her cuddly side more and more often. She loves walking, but she still finds being put on a leash scary. She may even leak urine out of fear.

In her foster home, she lived with a Labradoodle. We now know that Penny only wants to share her new home with Rodgers and no other dogs. She can also lunge at other dogs when outside.

Rodgers loves people, cuddling, and FOOD!! Penny is his best buddy; they do everything together. They do have to eat separately, though, because Rodgers loves food so much that he’ll eat Penny’s portion too without hesitation.

Both dogs are house-trained, except for a few small accidents from Rodgers. Penny can also still leak urine sometimes due to fear.

In their previous home, they could be left alone for half a day, but this will have to be built up again step by step.

For this duo, we are looking for a quiet and loving home where they can stay together. Someone who enjoys sitting on the couch with them. (Ideally, they would also sleep in bed 😊).
