For many people, working in an animal shelter is an emotional challenge, but for the staff at the Haags Dierencentrum, the beautiful daily moments outweigh the sadness. Sometimes, a special friendship between two dogs provides a glimmer of hope for a ‘forever home’. This is currently the case for residents Angel and Thor.
Angel, a Cane Corso crossbreed not yet four years old, has been at the shelter for over two years. After a fearful start, she has blossomed into a dog who feels safe with people she knows. Despite her progress, she still needs guidance outdoors and is walked with a muzzle.
A few months ago, Thor, an American Akita nearly two years old, entered the shelter after his owner failed to pick him up. Thor is described as a “mischievous, far too clumsy toddler” who generally reacts socially to other dogs.
Unexpected love
Due to their high energy levels and the limited space in the kennel, the caretakers decided to let Angel and Thor play together in the field. To the team’s great surprise, Angel didn’t lash out; instead, she fell for Thor’s charms.
Since then, the two have been inseparable. They share a corridor in the shelter and spend the day together on the patio. “Angel is visibly improving, and Thor is just as happy with his new friend who can hold her own,” says the Haags Dierencentrum.
Call for joint adoption
The team sees a parallel between this friendship and a success story from ten years ago, when two inseparable dogs found a new home together. The shelter now hopes for the same miracle for Angel and Thor and would ideally like to rehome them together.
For this duo, the Haags Dierencentrum is looking for a loving home with a large garden where the dogs are also allowed inside. They are looking for owners with experience in positive dog training.
